Last week we brought Chappie Golf to The Woodlands at Furman, a senior living community in Greenville, South Carolina, and the course came to the residents instead of the other way around. Residents grabbed a club, took their swings, and had a great time. It was a good reminder of something the research keeps confirming: golf is one of the best things you can do for your health as you age.
Why golf is good medicine
- It may help you live longer. A study of nearly 5,900 adults over 65 found that about 15% of regular golfers died over a decade, compared with about 25% of non-golfers. (The Golf Business)
- It builds strength and balance. An R&A backed study found golfers under 80 had better strength and balance than non-golfers their age. Better balance means fewer falls. (Golf Business News)
- It's gentle and safe. In that same study, new golfers trained for 10 weeks with no golf related injuries.
- It keeps you social. Golf is a game you play together, and time with friends is good for the mind and the heart.
When the course is out of reach
For many people in senior living, a round of golf isn't simple anymore. Driving to the course, walking 18 holes, and booking tee times can all get in the way. Some residents no longer drive at all. The benefits of golf don't have to stop there, though. You just need a course that comes to you.
Turn the whole property into a golf course
That's where Chappie Golf comes in. Our balls are safe, so you can play almost anywhere without worrying about broken windows or bruised neighbors. At The Woodlands at Furman, the grounds themselves became the course.
Here are a few ways a senior community can play:
- Lawn course: Set up a few targets across the grounds and play a mini round on your daily walk.
- Courtyard chipping: Practice short shots right outside the door.
- Indoor rainy day play: Move the game to a large common room or hallway when the weather turns.
- Friendly tournaments: Pair up residents, family, and staff for a little competition.
Every swing still works your balance, core, and coordination. Every walk between shots adds steps. And every round brings people together.
Bring Chappie Golf to your community
A huge thank you to the residents and staff at The Woodlands at Furman for welcoming us. Golf is good for the body, the mind, and the spirit, and it should be open to everyone, no matter where they live.
Run a senior living community or know someone who'd love to play? Shop Chappie Golf and bring the course home.
